What tends to help
- Use a 48-hour rule: add it to the cart, close the tab, decide on Thursday.
- Delete saved cards and one-tap checkout. Re-typing sixteen digits is a surprisingly good filter.
- Unsubscribe from the emails. Most impulse buys start life as a notification.
- Log the amount rather than the item. The running total is the number that changes behavior.
- Move what you did not spend somewhere you would have to think to get it back.
Instead of it
- Wishlist, not cart. Most of the appeal survives about a day.
- Kill shop notifications. Sales find you; you rarely go looking.
- Move it to savings. Same day, same amount, makes the saving as real as the spend.
- Walk the aisle empty. Browsing without a basket is a different activity.
Worth knowing about
- Delete saved cards and one-tap checkout. Re-typing sixteen digits is a surprisingly effective filter. Most impulse purchases do not survive it.
- An automatic transfer on payday. Move it before you can see it. Money in a separate account you would have to think about is money you mostly keep.
- A ruthless unsubscribe session. Twenty minutes once. Most impulse buys begin life as a marketing email or a push notification.
- The 48-hour list. Wishlist instead of cart, revisit on Thursday. Very little of the appeal survives two days.
